BANGOR DAU LLIW, “DAU LLIW”

The first Welsh Terrier champion of record, judged by Mr. F. H. Colmore on September 16, 1887, was Mr. W.A. Dew’s owner-bred bitch, Bangor Dau Lliw (“Dau Lliw” in Welsh translating to “Two Colors”). Mr. Dew was one of the founders of The Welsh Terrier Club, formed in 1886 in Bangor, Wales.

Captain I. Morlais Thomas wrote in The Welsh Terrier (Daergi Cymraeg) Handbook: “Welsh Terrier history was certainly made at the Bangor show (16th September, 1887), by Mr. F. H. Colmore who judged and awarded the bitch Challenge prize to Dew’s “Bangor Dau Lliw”, thereby making the first Welsh Terrier bitch Champion. This bitch was originally “Dau Lliw” (21742) and was bred October, 1885, by Mr. Dew. The dog Challenge prize was awarded to Mr. Buckley’s “Mawddwy Nonsuch”….And at this show Mr. Walter Glynn exhibited his first Welsh Terrier, the puppy dog “Dim Saesonaeg”, who was bred by Mr. R.O. Pughe, and who was awarded V.H.C….Few breeders and exhibitors of the Welsh Terrier are aware that the British Museum of Natural History at South Kensington, London, holds the actual preserved embodiment of the renowned Ch. “Dim Saesonaeg”—Exhibit No. D188, presented by the late Mr. Walter S. Glynn, in 1932.”*
