In 1977-1978, three Welsh Terrier Bitches were simultaneously in the Top Ten All Terrier Charts, a record that has been unbroken to this day. The girls included Ch. Coltan Carey, “Carey”; Ch. Copperboots Wee Blaste, “Blaste”; and Ch. High Flyer Top Star, “Susie.”
In The Welsh Terrier Leads the Way, Bardi McLennan commented that “Blaste” (by Ch. Vagabond of Reglib ex Langwood’s Aurora Sadora), and handled by Clay Coady, for size was “the one in the middle [as compared to “Carey” and “Susie”]…. She quickly topped the record of wins set by Jim Royal [Ch. Golden Oak Jim Royal CD, who was Top Terrier in 1970 and 1971] with nineteen Bests in Show in one year and then went all the way to BIS at Montgomery in that ‘year of the bitches.’ She thus joined an elite group of Welsh to do so.”*
Marge and Dr. O.W. “Mac” McClung (Wenmar) won the Welsh Terrier Club of America Grand Challenge Cup five times, surpassed by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Clark (Halcyon) winning eight times, the de Coppet sisters (Windermere) 10 times, and Mrs. Edward P. (“Ernestine”) Alker (Twin Ponds), winning a record 13 times.
“Blaste” is fourth of only seven Welsh Terriers to win Best In Show at Montgomery County Kennel Club in 1978. The six other MCKC winners include Ch. Toplight Template of Twin Ponds in 1952 and 1953, Ch. Caradoc Llwyd of St. Aubrey in 1961, Ch. Dewi of St. Aubrey in 1962, Ch. Anasazi Billy The Kid in 1996, GCh. Ch. Abbeyrose Captain Jack in 2018, and GCh. Ch. Brightluck Money Talks in 2019.
