The Number One Terrier of the Year—the ultimate apex in conformation for any terrier—has been awarded in the United States only five times to four Welsh Terriers. Ch. Golden Oak Jim Royal CD, “Jim” was the first, winning back-to-back years, 1970 and 1971. Ch. Anasazi Annie Oakley, “Annie” was the second in 1985, GCh. Ch. Shaireab’s Bayleigh Daenerys Stormborn, “Khaleesi” was the third in 2017, and GCh. Ch. Brightluck Money Talks, “Dazzle” was the fourth in 2019.
In Welsh Rarebits (January 11, 1972), a short article appearing in Mrs. S. Sloan Colt’s Coltan Kennels scrapbooks, housed in the Welsh Terrier Club of America archives, Mr. and Mrs. Edmond P. Fitzwilliam note “Jim’s” sensational record: 17 Best in Show wins, 45 Group One, 15 Group Two, two Group Three, two Group Four, and two Specialty wins out of 67 Best of Breed wins. If not for a nagging injury toward the end of his career, he would have exhibited longer and collected additional achievements. “Jim” returned to the obedience ring many years later and earned his CD title at the age of nine years.
